While we have not quite reached the age of personal jetpacks and robot butlers, we are on our way! Used in everything from space exploration to mechanics to biology, the field of robotics is growing quickly.
Some of the finest achievements of humanity owe a lot to robotics technology. As Linda Bigonesse of NASA notes, “It would not have been possible to put together the International Space Station without the use of robotic arms.” Exploration of other planets offers incredible potential for discoveries, and this, too, is only possible through the building, programming and deploying of robots such as the Mars Rover.
Making the everyday world better
The modern world is already reliant on such things as elevators, trains and stoplights to keep things running. Knowledgeable people trained in programming, circuitry and wiring are needed to develop and maintain the crucial infrastructure of society.
If you love troubleshooting and problem-solving as well as hands-on work, this could be the field for you. Graduates with a degree in Industrial Systems Technology enter the job force earning around $40,000 annually.
Machines and humans working together
Manufacturing is another area where there is a growing need for the use of robotics. Many positions in the design, construction, and maintenance of robots will be opening up for those with a degree or certificate in a robotics-related field.
A report by the Computing Community Consortium and Computing Research Association details the ways in which robots and humans will soon work together to create a safer manufacturing environment. “Humans are better at dealing with unexpected events to keep production lines running, while robots have better precision and repeatability, and can lift heavy parts,” it notes.
Combining the two will “reduce expensive medical problems, e.g., carpal tunnel syndrome, back injuries, burns, and inhalation of noxious gases and vapors.” This will also “reduce time in pipeline for finished goods, allowing systems to be more responsive to changes in retail demand.”
With a degree or certificate in Computer Aided Manufacturing, you can enter the fast-paced world of manufacturing, where the ability to monitor and respond to changes in the needs on the production floor is critical. Do you already enjoy or work in computer programming? If you are detail-oriented and have excellent communication skills, this would be a great career path.
A degree in Electronic Engineering, Computer Science or Mechanical Engineering will help lay the foundation for any career in robotics. Math, physics, and critical thinking skills are crucial if you want to become a Robotics Engineer-designing and maintaining the machines that increase productivity in automated manufacturing.
Providing comfort and healing
The use of robotics in the medical fields-from dentistry to surgery-helps save lives and brings comfort to many. Smaller incisions, which lead to faster healing, and more precise control of tools than can be offered by the unaided human hand are now possible.
Near-microscopic tools are already used to perform previously impossible diagnostic and surgical procedures. Prosthetics development has vastly improved quality-of-life for patients. New monitoring equipment helps patients in the early stages of dementia and their families. And more advances are on the way. With a degree in Robotics Engineering, you could help design, build, and deploy life-saving devices.
As human-robot interfacing expands, degrees in biology and even psychology will be useful in determining how these relationships can and will develop. When added to a Mechanical Engineering degree, you can develop machines that move more naturally, and lend a friendlier face to robots and other mechanical devices used in medical and caring settings.
